Lauri Recanati
From her Atelier bay window overlooking the Mediterranean Sea
and the picturesque flee market of old Jaffa, Lauri Recanati is invariably inspired.
For the past 8 years she comes to her studio daily,
devoted to her work, refining
and perfecting her skills and individual methods as a mosaic artist. Mosaic for Lauri
is not merely mastery or an art form but an outlook on life:
"the ability to break things and put them back together in a completely new way and
to make broken things live again"
reflects to her something deeply spiritual. In her own way she is a story teller,
weaving together the most interesting and unusual objects, like exotic figurines,
broken utensils, coins, Venetian mirrors or buttons from her ever growing
collection to spark the imagination and bring magic to everyday life.
\The Quilted Elephant
My years studying and working in Manhattan gave me the opportunity to develop a keen eye for detail. Walking uptown one day, somewhere in the fifties between 3rd and Lex. Avenues,
I passed a tiny white cubicle of a building, modern clean, called The Quilted Giraffe restaurant, in the courtyard stood a life-size ceramic, covered with mosaic, giraffe.
It was exquisite; I couldn't get over this art form, so I went back again and again…and again to see it...
32 years later, after discovering myself in the world of mosaics, I went into that very first memory and wanted to pay a kind of tribute to it, hence The Quilted Elephant collection of works, all influenced by that image. I added my own giraffe, Rose, in addition to a whole menagerie of animals and objects all which can be viewed on this site as well, all are marked with the elephant icon. |
